Group Led By Google Wants More Speed On The Web, Releases Nginx PageSpeed Module In Beta

04_ngx_pagespeedGoogle really cares about the web being faster. In 2010 it led a group of contributors in releasing a module for Apache web servers called PageSpeed. Today, the same group has released a version for Nginx, an alternative to Apache, which is also open source and used by massively trafficked sites like Netflix, Hulu, Pinterest, Airbnb, WordPress.com, Zynga, Zappos and GitHub. In alpha testing, content-delivery network provider, MaxCDN, reported a 1.57 second decrease in average page load times, with bounce rates dropping by 1 percent. While those seconds might not seem like a big deal, they are, especially when you have multiple visitors on your site performing multiple tasks. Think about how it feels when you use Hulu at a Starbucks; that almost 2 seconds could ease some of your frustrations in waiting for a page and video to load. The module is available for webmasters on GitHub, with open source participation coming from Google, Taobao, We-Amp and individual developers. In a post by Jeff Kaufman, who is an engineer on Google’s Make the Web Faster Team, (have to love Google’s team names), he explains how PageSpeed works: Running as a module inside Nginx, ngx_pagespeed rewrites your webpages to make them faster for your users. This includes compressing images, minifying CSS and JavaScript, extending cache lifetimes, and many other web performance best practices. All of mod_pagespeed’s optimization filters are now available to Nginx users. With Google pushing to bring faster Internet to everyone in the world, starting with a few cities in the United States, it makes sense that the company would participate in projects like this to help the rest of the web keep up. Naturally, Google is able to leverage the work of projects like this for its own sites, since speed is a huge concern of CEO Larry Page for its existing and future products.

Catch Notes for iPhone and iPad review: Organize all your ideas, notes, and reminders

Catch Notes for iPhone and iPad review: Organize all your ideas, notes, and reminders

If you're looking for a fresh take on a get things done app, Catch Notes for iPhone and iPad does just that. Not only does Catch Notes combine reminders, notes, ideas, and checklists into one app, it does it with a great interface while also supporting many common task types. Whether you want to upload photos, take free hand notes, or be reminded to do something, Catch Notes can do it all within one singular app.

Catch Notes starts by allowing you to create spaces for better organizing your data. By default, you can create up to five spaces for free. After that, you can buy additional spaces as an in-app purchase. For most users, five spaces will be plenty to at least get started. These areas can be used in any manner you'd like. For instance, you can have one space for work and another for home. You can also choose to re-order them by simply dragging them in the main list in any order you'd like. If you consistently work on several projects at one time that you'd like to keep separate, you may have a need for more spaces.

Once you have set up your spaces and organized Catch notes the way you'd like, you can start adding notes and other types of content into any space you'd like. Along the bottom of Catch Notes, tap on the "+" sign to start creating and adding content. Supported media types include standard text notes, reminders (with notifications), photos, audio notes, and checklists. You can create as many of these items as you'd like within any space. For people attempting to organize many projects, you can create several checklists within a space for as many projects as you'd like. Catch Notes also supports hashtags which makes searching for notes easier. Just tag them however you'd like. Catch Notes will start aggregating tags you use frequently as you type them for quicker tagging.

You can share spaces with other Catch Notes users as well. This way you can collaborate on projects or group tasks easier and without having to email or compare notes. If you do need to share something with someone that isn't using Catch Notes, you can always do so by emailing any note you have stored. You can also attach photos to existing notes by either snapping a new picture or using one that already exists in your camera roll.

The good

  • Easy to set up and start using in a matter of seconds
  • The initial five space allotment will be plenty for most users
  • Notifications work well eliminate the need for a reminders app on top of a task management app
  • Great interface that's not only clean, but has a sensible workflow
  • Native sync at no additional cost, which is great if you want to use both the iPhone and iPad version

The bad

  • No way to change notification tone
  • It'd be nice to see more share options, such as to other apps or via other delivery methods other than email

The bottom line

Catch Notes is very reminiscent Evernote with the added ability for reminders. The only down side is that Catch Notes doesn't have a Mac counterpart at this time. For most users that have a need to manage multiple projects or notes, they'll most likely want the ability from their Mac as well. If that sounds like you, a productivity suite such as Things is probably a better option.

If you aren't a Mac user or don't care about having a desktop client, Catch Notes makes a great alternative to some of the more expensive get things done apps out there. Considering you can get started at no cost to you, there's nothing to lose by at least giving it a try.

Clashes at Sunni protest site in Iraq kill 23

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Clashes erupted in northern Iraq when security forces raided a rally site used by Sunni demonstrators early on Tuesday, killing at least 23 people and wounding dozens in an escalation likely to enrage protesters who have been rallying against the government for months.

The fighting broke out in the town of Hawijah, about 240 kilometers (160 miles) north of Baghdad. It is one of several overwhelmingly Sunni communities that have been the site of anti-government protests. The rallies began in December and are presenting a stubborn challenge to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Shiite-led government.

There were conflicting reports on the casualties.

Iraq's Defense Ministry said 20 people whom it described as "militants who were using the demonstration as a safe haven" were killed, along with an army officer and two soldiers. Another nine members of the military were wounded, the ministry said in a statement. It initially described those killed as members of al-Qaida and Saddam Hussein's outlawed Baath Party.

Sheikh Abdullah Sami al-Asi, a Sunni provincial official from Hawija, said the fighting began early in the morning when security forces entered the protest area and tried to make arrests. He said scores of people have been wounded or killed.

The provincial health director for the area, Sidiq Omar Rasool, said earlier in the day that 14 people were killed and more than 50 people were wounded.

On Friday, a checkpoint jointly run by the police and army near Hawija came under attack, and militants seized a number of weapons before retreating into the crowd of protesters, according to the Defense Ministry.

That led to a standoff, with security forces at times trying to negotiate with local and tribal officials the handover of those involved in the raid.

The Defense Ministry said it warned demonstrators to leave the protest area before moving in early Tuesday, and that large numbers of protesters left the site. As Iraqi forces tried to make arrests, they came under heavy fire from several types of weapons, and were targeted by snipers, according to the Defense Mininstry account.

Security forces detained 75 people and seized multiple weapons, including machine guns, hand grenades, knives, daggers and swords, the ministry said.

A United Nations spokeswoman in Iraq, Eliana Nabaa, urged both sides to avoid further violence.

"Stop immediately the use of weapons," she said.

Protests against the Shiite-dominated government began in western Iraq in December following the arrest of bodyguards assigned to Sunni Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi. The rallies quickly spread to other areas that are home to Iraq's minority Sunni Arabs, including Hawijah.

Demonstrators are protesting alleged discrimination by the government, including the application of a tough anti-terrorism law that they believe unfairly targets their sect.

The protests have been largely peaceful, though there have been occasional incidents of violence. In January, at least five protesters were killed in clashes with security forces in Fallujah, west of Baghdad.

Calls went out Tuesday through mosque loudspeakers in Fallujah, urging residents to protest along a major highway to show solidarity with the people of Hawijah.

After the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, the Hawijah was considered one of the most dangerous areas for both American and Iraqi forces. They frequently faced deadly attacks by different groups of Sunni militants, particularly al-Qaida's Iraq arm.

Like in other Sunni towns, Hawijah residents accuse the Shiite-led governments in Baghdad of neglecting them and practicing sectarian agenda. They also oppose the Kurds' ambitions to annex nearby Kirkuk to their three-province autonomous region.

Also Tuesday, two bombs went off near a Sunni mosque in the southern Bagdad neighborhood of Dora, killing five worshipers and wounding 21, police and health officials said. The worshippers were leaving the mosque after morning prayers at around 5:00 a.m. when the bombs exploded simultaneously, two police officers said.

A medical official confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Team Alpha Male fighters take huge leap forward at UFC on Fox 7 with Duane Ludwig?s help

At UFC on Fox 7, Chad Mendes knocked out Darren Elkins in 1:08. Joseph Benavidez finished off a blistering performance against Darren Uyenoyama with a TKO ate the end of the second round. T.J. Dillashaw won with a TKO over Hugo Viana in the first round.

What do these fighters have in common? They all fight for Team Alpha Male, the camp headed by UFC veteran and former WEC champ Urijah Faber. Throw in that Faber has two submission wins in two months, and 2013 has been very good to the Team Alpha Males.

But what is it that has pushed these men to such a win streak? Take a look in their corner. The newest addition is UFC veteran Duane Ludwig, who is recovering from a knee injury and a tough, three-loss run in the UFC. He started with Team Alpha Male early this year, and has clearly made a difference.

Dillashaw said Ludwig's role of head trainer has helped develop the talent that was already in their camp.

"I believe we had the talent already in our gym ? we had all the talent in the world," Dillashaw told MMAjunkie.com. "(Ludwig) just came in and kind of perfected it. He changed some small things and is just kind of staying on us."

Team Alpha Male has long had a reputation for taking wrestlers and turning them into fighters. Mendes, Faber and Dillashaw were all Division I wrestlers for California schools. Benavidez wrestled in high school and for a year in college. Under Faber's tutelage, this band of fighters were good enough to earn title shots, but they didn't fare well in those fights.

At UFC 149, Faber lost to Renan Barao in an interim men's bantamweight title fight. Jose Aldo knocked out Chad Mendes when they fought for the featherweight title at UFC 142. Benavidez has dropped a title bout at bantamweight and most recently, against Demetrious Johnson at UFC 152 at flyweight.

Ludwig's next task will be helping his fighters come up with a way to win those title fights. Mendes has had three, first-round knockout wins since losing to Aldo and is back in the title picture. Benavidez's two wins since losing to Johnson have him on the path back to another title shot.

Will Ludwig help his fighters get that elusive belt? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Italian president begins talks on new coalition

By Philip Pullella

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's president launched urgent talks that could lead to the naming of a prime minister on Tuesday after two months of post-election stalemate that has weighed on a stagnant economy and alarmed Rome's partners in the euro zone.

After an angry and emotional blast on Monday at the very parliament that handed him an unprecedented - and unwanted - second term as head of state at the weekend, 87-year-old Giorgio Napolitano began a rapid round of consultations on Tuesday.

No party leaders were invited to the meetings with the Senate and house leaders of all the parliamentary groups, which Napolitano wants to wrap up within the day, suggesting that a government could be in place by the weekend.

Hopes that a government can be formed quickly gave a further boost to financial markets on Tuesday, with the yield on 10-year Italian government bonds dropping below 4 percent and the spread, or risk premium over German bonds, narrowing further.

Having threatened to resign if the parties continue with what he called their "irresponsibility" after the inconclusive parliamentary election of February 24 and 25, Napolitano seems determined to force the pace, and could even designate a prime minister to form a grand coalition government within the day.

One leading name is Giuliano Amato, a veteran from the center-left, who has been prime minister twice but no longer sits in parliament.

There has also been speculation that Matteo Renzi, the 38-year-old mayor of Florence, who is seen as a likely future leader of the center-left Democratic Party (PD), could be asked to head a government. He arrived in Rome on Tuesday.

Whoever is named is likely to forge a multi-party cabinet to take over from the technocrat government of outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, who was appointed in late 2011.

Though there is scant appetite among the leaders for a new election, any new administration might struggle for stability or the parliamentary backing needed for economic and political reforms seen as vital to revive Italy's competitiveness.

The center-left narrowly won a majority in the lower house but failed to win control of the Senate, and its inability since February to cut a deal with either Silvio Berlusconi's center-right or the shock new third force of Beppe Grillo's anti-establishment 5-Star Movement has left the country in limbo.

PRESIDENT'S FRANKNESS

The otherwise largely ceremonial presidency plays a key role in the process of forming coalitions, and the coincidence of Napolitano reaching the end of his seven-year term while that deadlock was unresolved led to a series of failed attempts by parliament to elect a new head of state last week.

In the process, the PD fractured, and its leader, Pier Luigi Bersani, resigned, adding to the complex landscape Napolitano must now navigate.

The near-implosion of the PD could add to the difficulties in forming a government as sections of the party have refused to contemplate joining forces with their historic enemy Berlusconi.

Berlusconi in turn has insisted he would only accept a coalition government led by politicians who would give it a share of power with the PD, ruling out a repeat of the kind of technocrat government led by Monti.

The scandal-mired media tycoon Berlusconi was obliged to step down as prime minister in 2011 in favor of Monti amid fears of financial meltdown. But he and his People of Freedom (PDL) have emerged strengthened by the turmoil in the PD.

The PDL is expected to be part of the coalition, but 5-Star, which won a quarter of the vote and speaks for millions of Italians disillusioned with an entire political class, says it will sit in opposition in parliament.

It will be joined by the leftist Left Ecology Freedom party, the former partner of the PD, which said it would also refuse to take part in a grand coalition government.

The instability of the political landscape was underlined by the results of the first local election to be held since the national vote, which saw the center-left candidate take a narrow win in the northern region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Grillo's 5-Star Movement saw its score drop to less than 14 percent, around half the total it won in the national election in February.

Former Apple ad man thinks the iPhone's naming convention needs to change

Does Apple's naming scheme for iPhone need to change?

Since 2008 Apple has introduced a new iPhone design one year and then followed it up with an S-variant the next. iPhone 3G was followed by iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 was followed by iPhone 4S. It's gotten to the point where many people are already assuming the next iPhone will be the iPhone 5S. Almost a month ago Rene wrote an article examining whether this iPhone 5S assumption could become a problem for Apple, and pointed out some ways Apple might already be moving to solve that problem. Now Apple's former ad guru, Ken Segall -- who was responsible for naming the iMac -- has shared some of his own thoughts on the matter:

More important, tacking an S onto the existing model number sends a rather weak message. It says that this is our ?off-year? product, with only modest improvements. If holding off on the big number change achieved some great result, I might think otherwise.

I've talked to a lot of people who say they wait for the new model, or they wait for the S upgrade, but don't buy both. Is that really a problem, though? Is there any evidence to suggest Apple really intends for most people to buy every model, rather than just the next new model after their (typically 2 year) contract expires? If you go from iPhone 4 to iPhone 5, or iPhone 4S to iPhone 5S, what exactly is Apple losing out on?

(AP) ? Trey Burke scored seven points in the first 2:44 and Spike Albrecht made three 3-pointers to stay perfect from beyond the arc for the tournament to help Michigan take a 20-17 lead over Louisville midway through the first half of NCAA title game.

Burke, the AP Player of the Year, matched his entire output from Saturday night's semifinal in a mere 164 seconds. But he also drew his second foul with 11:09 left and was lifted from the game by coach John Beilein.

Albrecht, meanwhile, made all three of his 3-point attempts to improve to 8-for-8 from long range thus far in the tournament.

Wayne Blackshear had five points for Louisville, as the teams got off to a fast-paced and sizzling start. They combined to make 14 of their first 25 shots.

Watching from the stands were all five members of the Fab Five, the brash group of sophomores who led Michigan to the final in 1993 ? the program's last appearance at the Final Four.

That included Chris Webber, who infamously called a timeout the Wolverines didn't have at the end of Michigan's 77-71 loss to North Carolina in the 1993 final. He has had very little to do with his alma mater in recent years, but was seen getting out of his car and heading into the Georgia Dome shortly before tip-off.

Top-seeded Louisville (34-5) is trying to bring its first title back to the state of Kentucky's "other" school since 1986. Sitting on the bench with the Cardinals is sophomore guard Kevin Ware, the team's inspiration since snapping his tibia in the regional final last weekend.

Cardinals coach Rick Pitino is working the sideline hours after being named to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.

Pitino is trying to become the first coach to lead two programs to national championships. He took Kentucky to the title in 1996.

Russ Smith, the Louisville team leader who Pitino has nicknamed "Russdiculous" for some of his wild ? and wildly effective ? antics on the court, scores 18.9 points a game for the Cardinals during the season but has picked up the scoring in the tournament, averaging 25 in the five Louisville wins.

The Cardinals are playing without their main reserve, Ware, who broke his leg in the regional final against Duke. Needing a pickup without Ware, reserve swingman Luke Hancock scored 20 points in the 72-68 win over Wichita State. And rarely used walk-on Tim Henderson made two key 3-pointers during the comeback.

"The other night, we were not going to play in the championship game unless a walk-on steps up and makes a play to give us momentum," Pitino said in a pregame interview.

Michigan topped Syracuse 61-56 on Saturday despite an off night from Burke, who finished with only seven points on 1-for-8 shooting.

Burke, a sophomore, seriously considered leaving for the NBA after last season but decided he had unfinished business left in Ann Arbor. He picked up the AP Player of the Year award, among others, and is now one victory away from the ultimate prize in college hoops.

Before leaving the locker room, Beilein gave his team a pep talk: "You play with poise, play with confidence, you do all those things today and we're going to have one heck of a celebration," he said.

Monday night's game is the final act in what has been an ugly season overall in college hoops, with scoring at its lowest (67.49 points per team) since 1951-52 and shooting at its worst (43.3 percent) since 1964-65. The 131.2-points-per-game average during March Madness is the lowest since the 3-point line was brought to the game in 1987, though the teams were on pace to easily surpass that midway through the first half.

Major League Baseball Strikes Deal With Qualcomm To Sort Out Wireless In Ballparks

Image (1) 3dbaseball.jpg for post 156595Major League Baseball is the stuff of Americana and nostalgia, but it's also trying hard to keep up with the 21st century. Today, MLBAM, its interactive/digital media subsidiary, said that it has inked a deal with Qualcomm, for the latter to provide technology and engineering support to improve mobile networks at 30 Major League Baseball ballparks. The deal follows an agreement struck between T-Mobile and MLBAM in January for the mobile carrier to help finally break the wired link between dugout and bullpen, and comes as the two parties forecast one-thousand-fold demand for mobile data in ballparks in the near future.

Gunmen raid newspaper offices in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say gunmen broke into the offices of four independent newspapers in Baghdad and stabbed and beat five employees there.

A police officer said on Tuesday that the assailants ? some wearing military uniforms ? also damaged computers and office furniture. They used baton and knives, but not their pistols.

The officer added that an investigation was under way into the Monday attack. A health official confirmed that five people were hurt. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Iraq is ranked among the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists. Hundreds of journalists were killed in the country since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

ReDigi, copyright, and the crises of ownership in the digital age ...

the-digital-self

Don?t even think about trying to re-sell any of those under-played MP3s on your computer ? that would likely be against the law. This is according to U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan in Manhattan, who ruled this week against Arizona-based company ReDigi, the ?world?s first? digital equivalent of a used record store, which allows people to buy and sell ?used? music tracks and albums originally purchased through Apple?s iTunes.

Sullivan?s decision stems from a January 2012 lawsuit filed by Capitol Records, which asserted that ReDigi?s business was based entirely on copyright infringement. ReDigi countered the claim, saying that its service abides by copyright law because it does not make any copies of the MP3 files it re-sells ? instead, it simply transfers the original file to the ReDigi servers, and permanently erases it from the seller?s hard drive. Because no copy is being made, ReDigi?s argument goes, its business should be legal. Sullivan, of course, disagreed.

The ruling against ReDigi is seen as a win for Capitol Records and the music industry in general, and a loss for ReDigi (which may have to shut down entirely) and any other company that wants to make a business dealing with pre-owned digital goods ? like Apple and Amazon. But the real losers here are the consumers. It?s time we fight back the only (legal) way we can: Stop buying digital music.

Thwarted by copyright

The first issue here is something known as the ?first sale? doctrine, which says you are allowed to ?sell or otherwise dispose? of a copyright work that you?ve purchased without first obtaining permission from the copyright holder. ?First sale? is what allows any secondary marketplace, like eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, or your local used book store, to operate legally.

When you pay for something, you should own it. You should be able to resell it, delete it, or play it on whatever device you wish. At least, that?s the theory.

ReDigi claims that its business should be legal based on ?first sale,? a provision of copyright law that the Supreme Court reaffirmed just this month (PDF). Sullivan dismissed this argument based on the interpretation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which prohibits the unlicensed reproduction of protected works. What ReDigi was doing, says Sullivan, clearly violated the DMCA because copies were being made (even though ReDigi refutes that claim). As an alternative, Sullivan suggested that users could simply sell the hard drive on which the copyrighted file is stored. Yes, really.

The bigger issue at hand is the DMCA itself, which even the U.S. Register of Copyrights Maria A. Pallante believes is outdated and confusing. It is the DMCA that sits behind most of the copyright issues we have in the U.S. It?s the law that killed Megaupload, and the one that makes it a federal crime to unlock your new smartphone. According to Pallante, Congress would do well to revamp U.S. copyright law to clear up the issue of ?first sale? as it applies to digital goods.

Here?s how Pallante explained the issue during a recent lecture at Columbia Law School:

?On the one hand, Congress may believe that in a digital marketplace, the copyright owner should control all copies of his work, particularly because digital copies are perfect copies (not dog-eared copies of lesser value) or because in online commerce the migration from the sale of copies to the proffering of licenses has negated the issue. On the other hand, Congress may find that the general principle of first sale has ongoing merit in the digital age and can be adequately policed through technology . . . Or more simply, congress may not want a copyright law where everything is licensed and nothing is owned.?

Let me repeat that last bit: ?everything is licensed and nothing is owned.? This line perfectly explains the nut of the problem; when it comes to digital goods, we don?t actually ?own? anything. That album you just purchased off of iTunes isn?t really yours ? you?ve simply paid for a license to play the songs in the privacy of your home or car. The same rules apply to ?your? ebooks, downloaded video games, apps, and any other software-based product.

Look at it this way

From copyright owners? perspective, this setup is completely understandable. While a physical book and an ebook might have the same content, it is virtually impossible for your average Web user to provide an infinite number of copies of the physical book to anyone who wishes to have it. The ?licensed not owned? technicality is there to stave off piracy. Were that setup to disappear, say experts, it could ?wreak havoc? on content publishers.

For consumers, licensing-only make much less sense. When you pay for something, you should own it. You should be able to resell it, delete it, or play it on whatever device you wish. At least, that?s the theory. Unfortunately for us consumers, it?s no longer the reality.

So, what are we to do? The first step is to contact your representatives in Congress and tell them to firmly establish the re-selling of digital goods as a legal practice. (Not a very satisfying option, I know.) As we wait for Congress to take action on this issue ? it will be a very long wait ? the only real way to fight back against the current system is to go analog-only. Only buy used books, used CDs or vinyl ? not because you want to be a hipster, but because it?s the only legal way to subvert a system that is designed specifically to make your life more difficult.

What other choice do we have?

Attempts to equate same-sex unions with marriage ... - PinkNews.co.uk

An Irish bishop says same-sex relationships can never be seen as ?equal? to heterosexual relationships.

Christopher Jones is the chairman of the Catholic bishops? Council for Marriage and the Family.

Mr Jones said he would welcome the opportunity to make an oral submission on same-sex marriage to the Irish Convention on the Constitution.

The convention is examining equal marriage, along with other key issues, in a year-long consultation exercise.

According to the Irish Times, Mr Jones warned that marriage was at risk of being attacked in Ireland.

In a written submission to the convention he said: ?attempts to equate same-sex unions with marriage will always ultimately fail because it is objectively impossible for homosexual couples to achieve the same natural end toward which the sexual complementarity of male and female is ordered.?

He continued: ?Therefore, were society to treat same-sex relationships and marriage as the same and therefore ?equal? would be to suggest that same-sex unions can be something that they are not.?

?Any change to the definition of marriage would create great difficulties,? he said, ?and in the light of this if there were two totally different definitions of marriage the church could no longer carry out the civil element.?

Mr Jones spoke of their being a ?potential impact? on the relationship between the ?family and the State, notably in relation to the rights of children?.

Meanwhile, the Church of Ireland Changing Attitude Ireland (CAI) group has strongly supported the extension of civil marriage to same-sex couples, in its submission to the?convention.

Sit In the Front Row and Get More Out of Your Meetings and Conferences

Sit In the Front Row and Get More Out of Your Meetings and ConferencesThe next time you're in a class, lecture, meeting, or similar event, sit in the front row. As Spindows founder Clay Hebert points out, it can dramatically improve your experience.

Concertgoers and some lucky sports fans probably already know there are a lot of benefits to sitting in the front, and many students may have already experienced this as well. But it really applies to anything, particularly for quieter events like meetings and conferences:

If you hide in the back, every row between you and the speakers is a potential distraction. Staring at the backs of everyone's head makes it easy for your mind to wander. It's too easy to check your phone and tune out.

By sitting in the front row, you'll avoid these distractions, focus on the speakers and learn more.

Of course, there are some places where you don't want to sit in the front?like a movie theater. But if there's a Q&A session afterwards, you just may want to rough it.
