(JACKSON, Miss.) ? ?Jackson State University?s Welcome Center, along with the Washington Addition Prenatal and Early Childhood Education Project and JSU?s Angel Tree Program, are partnering to host the JSU Helping Hands clothing and toy drive. The drive will run from Nov. 19 through Dec. 14. During this time, the JSU family, alumni and friends may bring new clothing or gifts for families in need and Blackburn Middle School students to the JSU Welcome Center, located on Dalton Street near the intersection of John R. Lynch Street.
The items will be packaged based on need for 15 economically disadvantaged families in the west Jackson community and 20 students at Blackburn Middle School. The gifts will be distributed to the families and students during a program at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Legacy Dining area of the JSU Student Center.
?JSU has always helped those who are less fortunate and we are pleased to team up with our colleagues this holiday season to serve as goodwill ambassadors to our neighbors,? said Gwen Caples, director of the Welcome Center. ?We welcome all gift bearers to the Welcome Center and look forward to adding cheer to the holiday season for those less fortunate.?
The wish list for families in west Jackson can be found here.
Angel Tree program gift ideas for the Blackburn Middle School students include: gift cards, iTunes cards, iPads, iPods, MP3 players, music CDs, video games, cameras, bicycles, scooters, electronic games, portable DVD players, and/or DVD movies.
?Blackburn Middle School is happy that we?re bringing back the Angel Tree Program,? said Tiffany Dockins of the JSU Division of General Counsel, who coordinators the JSU Angel Tree Program. ?The gifts will be distributed to 20 honor students who are also from needy families in the west Jackson community. I?m privileged to work on this project to help others in need.?
Dr. Angela Gobar serves as the Director of the Washington Addition Prenatal and Early Childhood Education Project, which is a community-based school-readiness project that coordinates the provision of resources and services for families with preschool-aged children around social, educational, economic, physical, and cultural and health needs.
?The JSU Helping Hands collaboration is one way of responding to an economic need of a family,? Gobar said.? ?A donation of clothing items could represent savings to a family and/or stretch their spending during the holiday season.?
Individuals and JSU departments that donate gifts will be acknowledged during the program on Dec. 14 in Legacy Dining. Members of the JSU family, including Dr. Kimberly Hilliard, Executive Director of the Division of Events and Community Engagement, and Blackburn Middle School Principal, Marietta Carter, will be on hand to help distribute the gifts.
All university staff are encouraged to lend support to the JSU Helping Hands clothing and toy drive and to attend the program. All gifts must be in a gift bag when dropped off to the Welcome Center. ?For more information, call the Welcome Center at 601-979-0883.
