Reproduction and life span are intertwined

Dec. 17, 2012 ? The gonad is well known to be important for reproduction but also affects animal life span. Removal of germ cells - the sperm and egg producing cells - increases longevity of the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms were a mystery. Now scientists at the Cologne-based Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, have discovered that germ cell removal flips a "molecular switch" that extends the life span by using components of a "developmental clock."

The roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans is a commonly used model organism in the field of aging research. It develops from an egg to adult through four larval stages. These developmental stages are controlled by a developmental clock. Yidong Shen and colleagues working in the department of Director Adam Antebi used a laser to remove the germ cells.

They found that the remaining gonadal cells trigger production of a steroid hormone called dafachronic acid. Dafachronic acid activates so-called microRNAs, which work as tiny molecular switches causing changes in gene expression that promote longevity. Interestingly, this same steroid hormone-microRNA switch was previously shown by Antebi and colleagues to be part of the developmental clock. Thus, the loss of the germ cells ultimately causes the worm to use developmental timers to put in motion a life-prolonging programme.

In uncovering these findings, the Max Planck scientists have added some more pieces to the puzzle of describing and understanding how longevity is regulated. The question now is whether humans also possess a similar microRNA-controlled switch system.

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas? Fitness Packages from TWO ...

Kristin-Park

I?ve never met Kristin in person, but her enthusiasm for Stroller Strides and fitness, and her passion for helping mothers comes through in every communication I?ve had with her.

Her Stroller Strides classes are about more than getting in shape. ?It?s really just a side effect,? she tells me. ?Part of my job is to get the moms in shape, but I also make sure they have time to focus on themselves.? Kristin considers another big part of her job to be keeping the kids the moms bring to class entertained. ?A lot of people say, ?Oh, my kid will never sit in his stroller during classes.? I promise you, they will.? She says during a typical class, ?We sing songs, blow bubbles. I get a little silly. I use puppets. We make sure they?re having a good time.?

Kristin also knows how tough the first steps can be. That?s why she offers a first class free, and she lets new members bring a friend. ?It?s hard to be the new girl,? she says. ?I want people to feel comfortable.?

Stroller Strides currently have exercise classes on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 8:30am. at the Salmon Run Mall, where they meet in front of Sears. Play groups are Friday after class. Those attending their first class should wear comfortable clothes and bring water to drink and a towel or yoga mat for floor exercises. Snack and stroller toys are good ideas for the kids too. Exercise bands are included with the membership, though you can borrow some at your first class. When the weather becomes warmer in the spring, classes move outside to Thompson Park. More information about classes and what to expect can be found on the Stroller Strides of Watertown website.?Those interested in trying a class are welcome to contact Kristin through Facebook, email or by phone. You can also register for a class on the website.

Kristin?s job as a Stroller Strides instructor is a perfect fit for her, and her classes are obviously a perfect fit for her list of growing clients. Why? Read below for more about Kristin and Stroller Strides of Watertown:

NNY Life: Where are you from, and what brings you to Watertown?

Kristin: I am originally from the Watertown area (and maybe one of the few who?ve moved away and came back.) After college I married and moved out of state. We?ve lived in several different areas of the US and after thirteen years, my husband?s job brought us back to NNY.

NNY Life: Tell me a little about yourself.

Kristin: In my professional career, I am a RN with a background in maternal child health and pediatric nursing, mostly in pediatric ICU at large urban hospitals. Personally, I?ve always been active and enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities.

I caught the fitness ?bug? several years ago after working with an inspiring personal trainer who was an avid weight lifter. She educated me about clean eating and encouraged me to make incredible changes in my body that I never knew were possible. From there I went on to study nutrition and women?s strength training on my own. It?s become a passion of mine.

NNY Life: Why did you choose Stroller Strides and how is it a good fit for your family?

Kristin: I chose to bring Stroller Strides to Watertown for so many reasons. When my son was born, we lived away from family in New England and my husband had a job that took him all over the country and overseas every week. I experienced first-hand what it is like to be a new Mom and not have family close by for support. Fortunately, at the time, I had access to several Mommy & Me style programs where I could bring my son and connect with other new Moms. Once I got the courage to get out of the house and go, meeting other new Moms made a world of difference.

When I moved back to NNY my daughter was born, I was frustrated that there weren?t the Mommy & Me activities that I was used to. I still really wanted and needed that Mommy camaraderie. With this, I was determined to start something on my own and I knew it would benefit our community too, but wasn?t sure what I would do.

I began to brainstorm. I already knew that I?d wanted to share my passion and knowledge of health and fitness with other women and had been considering branching into personal training for some time, although, I didn?t want to leave my newborn daughter any more than I already did working part time as a nurse. I was familiar with the Stroller Strides program from a close Mom friend in New England who loved it. I knew one of the pearls of Stroller Strides is that I could bring my daughter with me while I taught fitness classes to other Moms who also could bring their stroller-age children with them too. It seemed to be a perfect fit. From there the process of applications and interviews began and I purchased my franchise last summer.

NNY Life: What are some of the challenges you face as a business owner?

Kristin: As a mother of young children I think balance and time are always challenges no matter what you do in life. Starting a business has been much more time-consuming than I realized.

Getting the word out to my target audience has been a challenge as well. I started with what I knew and reached out to healthcare professionals in the area (Pediatricians and OB doctors). I received great feedback but most said they couldn?t endorse Stroller Strides because it?s not a non-profit organization. It?s been a challenge to get to the Ft Drum market because I am a civilian.

One of my biggest challenges has been taming the misconceptions about Stroller Strides. These are the ones I hear most often:

1. People think Stroller Strides is only for new post-partum Moms. Not true! We currently have children from 5mos up to 4.5 yrs old. As long as your children can ride in a stroller, they are welcome.

2. Several women have contacted me saying they are very interested in trying Stroller Strides but are worried because they are overweight or really out of shape. My response is not to worry because that?s what I?m here. Our group is made up of Moms of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. (We really are!)

3. Some think that we are strictly a stroller walking group. Stroller Strides classes incorporate cardio and strength training. I make sure every workout can be tailored to the clients of all fitness levels.

4. Finally, we are NOT only about exercise. We also have weekly playgroups and monthly mom?s time outs, too. Stroller Strides is about supporting women and motherhood. Motherhood can be isolating after the baby showers are over and Dad has returned to work. New Moms often feel they are the only ones who feel the way they do when in fact many of the experiences of having a newborn are somewhat universal. Regular activity has been shown to improve mild postpartum depression, too. Moms of older stroller-age children also benefit from Stroller Strides!

NNY Life: How do you promote your business?

Kristin: I?ve promoted Stroller Strides of Watertown using community flyers, brochures at a few pediatrician and obstetrician offices who have agreed to support the program. I also have a website, a Facebook page, and list the classes on Craigslist. I am constantly looking for more ways to reach our NNY Moms.

NNY Life: What are some of your business goals?

Kristin: One of the Stroller Strides mission statements is ?Stroller Strides helps Moms make strides in fitness, motherhood and life.? I truly believe in that. Even though it may sound clich?, I really want Stroller Strides of Watertown to be a resource to connect, support and empower women with young children like those programs did for me when I was a new Mom several years ago.

Meet Nova Schenk of The Pilates Room and the Watertown YMCA

You might recognize Nova Schenk?s name from yesterday?s Music Education Centers giveaway. When I started looking around for business owners to participate in the 12 Days of NNY Christmas giveaway, Nova was one of the first people I contacted. Not only did she offer far more than I ever expected ? a four session package of one-on-one Pilates instruction in conjunction with The Pilates Room in downtown Watertown (a $180 value), she also offered the music lessons package without being asked. That?s just an example of what a generous person she is. She doesn?t just give generously, she does so without hesitation, without wondering what she?ll get in return and with a big, genuine smile on her face.

She answered a few questions about her background and the career she?s building for herself out of a basic hope for the happiness of everyone she meets.

NNY Life: Where are you from, and what brings you to Watertown?

Nova: I am originally from the Albany area, but lived in the Rochester area for fifteen years before moving to Watertown. I am here in Watertown because my husband, Christian, just recently joined the US Army as a bandsperson.

NNY Life: Tell me a little about your education and background

Nova: I have a BS in Recreation Therapy and a Masters in Public Administration. In 2005 I decided to be a stay at home mom and finish my Masters degree. After having my second child in 2006, I decided to become an aquatic fitness instructor at my local YMCA and began teaching general aquafit and aqua pilates classes there. I continued teaching until I moved to Watertown in 2011, then began instructing aqua pilates and aqua yoga, as well as land classes in both. I? have just finished my Pilates Certification and am looking forward to working more intimately with my clients in a 1:1 or small group setting.

NNY Life: Why did you choose the business you?re in and how is it a good fit for you/your family?

Nova: I have always been into sports, but my interest transformed once I became pregnant and began taking aquatic exercise classes. Once that medium transformed to land exercise I was hooked ? I love being a part of people?s happiness and overall health. My work is a great partner to my husbands musical talents and schedule, as it is quite flexible. I feel I am setting a great example for my children and they typically become my first clients. My husband and I also run a music lesson studio (Music Education Centers), which allows me to work from home and develop my instructional skills.

NNY Life: What are some of the challenges you face as a business owner?

Nova: Balancing between being flexible to accomodate other?s needs and interests and setting firm boundaries for the sake of the business.

NNY Life: What are some of your business goals?

Nova: Happiness has always been the goal of any route I have taken in my life. Exercise has been a huge contributing factor to my ability to be a happy and successful wife and mother. I have always wanted to work for myself and be able to bring my dogs to work with me :) I ultimately want to create an all-encompassing space, called ?Feel Good Inc.?, where one can find yoga and pilates classes, musical instruction, small concerts, a small cafe and library, massage therapy, art shows and displays, and other local boutique type commerce. A place where anyone of any age can go to feel good, because after all that is what it?s all about.

Take Notes on How These GA Moms Turned Excitement into Dollars ...

Box Tops Moms from GreenForest McCalep Christian Academic Center in Decatur, GA. They are raising funds that will be used in the technology center.

After attending a local Box Tops University program four years ago, the Box Tops Moms at GreenForest McCalep Christian Academic Center in Decatur, GA, returned to their school invigorated and ready to bring in more money for their school. And the group of 10 moms did just that. In just four years, they?ve gone from collecting $78.00 for the entire school year, to collecting $4,000.00 in the first of two collection periods of this year alone.

We recently sat down with the Box Tops Moms of GreenForest-McCalep to get some insight on just how they were able to do it. And, we?ve provided their amazing tips below. Try them out at your school and let us know how well they work.

Committee member, Sherlonda Martin

Keep Everyone Informed:

Committee member, Sherlonda Martin shared with us that funds from the Box Tops 4 Education program are going directly to the PTO. The PTO uses the money to purchase additional technology needs for the school. Keeping the students and administration informed of their progress and about what?s going on in the program, ensures that everyone has a vested interest in collecting Box Tops.

Box Tops Mom Nicole Larson Jenkins

Get Everyone Involved:

Box Tops Mom Nicole Larson Jenkins, asked her siblings and her children?s grandparents to get involved. Her mother went to the ladies club in her neighborhood and started rounding up box tops for her grandchildren. Now, they have box tops being sent in from around the country. People are helping the school by sending in box tops from products that they?ve already been buying, but throwing away, up until now.

In an effort to keep things as simple as possible for the parents, the Box Tops Moms also drafted a letter that explained the Box Tops program, the school?s goals, how the money will be used, and how you can get involved. They gave the letter template to the parents of the school who, in turn, sent the pre-drafted letters off to their relatives and friends.

Box Tops Mom, Ursala Maddox

Set Goals:

The Box Tops Moms emphasized the importance of setting goals. Prior to the third year they set a goal of 100,000 box tops, a knowingly very aggressive goal. Ursala Maddox shared that:

?the thinking was we may not meet this goal but we?ll definitely have fun trying.?

At the end of the school year they had collected 56,000 box tops and went from raising $831.00 to $5,600.00 in just a one-year span.

Committee Member, Karlotta Brown

Get Creative:

How did they collect 56,000 box tops last year? Karlotta Brown told us that they got creative by thinking of ways to get everyone excited about the Box Tops program at the school. And the primary tool for raising so many box tops was contests. Monthly competitions with prizes such as pizza parties, cup cakes and ice cream excited the students and raised involvement. They even had friendly competitions between classrooms and grade levels. They also gave out certificates to the students who turned in the most box tops. You would be surprised at how much something like a free certificate would mean to the students.

And for many of their prizes, they reached out to the local community and asked for donations from merchants and organizations.

Maintain High Visibility with bulletin boards and banners.

Maintain High Visibility:

One of the main keys to their success was high visibility. The Box Tops Moms maintain high visibility for the program at the school. Each mom wore a Box Tops badge every time they entered the school. Additionally, they have dedicated bulletin boards in several places throughout the school for the Box Tops program. They posted flyers around the school, have public collection boxes, and they even have a Box Tops mascot that one of the parents made from a cardboard box. By keeping the visibility high, everyone at the school has a constant reminder of the Box Tops program.

?These ladies are doing an amazing job at their school. Hopefully you can take some of these tips to multiply your Box Tops earnings, and catapult your school to the next level. ?They are an excellent example of the benefits of having parents that are involved in their children?s educations.

BMWK ? please leave an encouraging word for the moms of?GreenForest McCalep Christian Academic Center as they are providing an excellent example of the power of parental involvement! ? Do you participate in your school?s Box Tops program? ?If yes, give us some additional tips and ideas for getting the school and parents excited about the program.

Disclosure: Lamar and I are paid spokesbloggers for the Box Tops For Education program. We will be providing information and stories throughout the school year in hopes of encouraging our community to take advantage of the millions of dollars that are being given to schools across the country each year. All opinions expressed are our very own.

Packers clinch NFC North with 21-13 win over Bears

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Green Bay Packers had the best comeback for all that trash-talk from the Chicago Bears.

Another NFC North title.

The Packers clinched their second straight division crown with a 21-13 victory over their archrivals Sunday ? at Soldier Field, no less.

Aaron Rodgers connected with James Jones on all three touchdowns, Clay Matthews hounded Jay Cutler with two sacks and the Packers limited the Bears to just 190 yards, their third-lowest total of the season. Rodgers finished 23 of 36 for 291 yards as Green Bay won its sixth straight against Chicago.

Brandon Marshall had a 15-yard TD catch for the Bears. But Cutler had another dismal day against the Packers, throwing an interception that led to Green Bay's second touchdown, and Alshon Jeffery was whistled for three offensive pass interference calls late in the second half.

Chicago has lost five of six and is in danger of missing the playoffs after beginning the season 7-1. Boos rained down on the Bears in the fourth quarter, and again as they walked off the field.

Packers vs. Bears is the NFL's oldest ? and fiercest ? rivalry, and it got a little more heated earlier in the week when Marshall and Lance Briggs ripped on their neighbors to the north.

Marshall was particularly vehement, saying he'd never disliked a team as much as he did the Packers.

Green Bay had held him to 24 yards on two catches in their first meeting back in September, and the NFL's receptions leader called the rematch "personal," adding, "But the talk, you have to back it up. We'll go out there and we'll do everything we need to do to get a win."

Marshall did his part, sidestepping one tackle and stiff-arming Casey Hayward on his way to the end zone for a touchdown that gave Chicago a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. He screamed and tossed the ball into the stands while the Chicago sideline erupted in high fives and hand slaps.

But the Packers silenced the Bears ? and their fans ? with a touchdown, interception and another touchdown, all in a three-minute span.

Having already been sacked twice, Rodgers was on the run again on third-and-6 when he spotted Randall Cobb down the right sideline. He threw a dart to Cobb, who hauled it in for a 31-yard gain that put the Packers at the Chicago 35. Three plays later, Rodgers connected with Jones for a 29-yard score that tied the game at 7.

After exchanging punts, Cutler was looking for Devin Hester but found Hayward, instead. It was the sixth pick of the season for the rookie, who grabbed the ball at midfield and returned it 24 yards. Five plays later, Rodgers hooked up with Jones again, this time for an 8-yard catch that made it 14-7 at halftime.

The Packers made it 21 unanswered points on the first drive of the second half. In another third-and-long situation, Rodgers threw incomplete to Jermichael Finley.

But the Packers got a second chance when Chris Conte was called for pass interference. After a delay of game penalty on Green Bay, Rodgers found Jones for a 6-yard score.

It was Jones' first three-touchdown game and the fourth multiple-TD game of his career.

The Bears had a chance to get back in the game when Charles Tillman forced a fumble by Ryan Grant and Nick Roach recovered it. Chicago got another break when Green Bay safety Morgan Burnett hauled Jeffery down right in front of the end zone ? and right in front of an official. The pass interference penalty gave Chicago the ball at the Green Bay 1.

But the Bears could only get a 34-yard field goal by Olindo Mare out of it after Jeffery was called for pass interference, his first of three.

The transistor turns 65, awaits AARP card

Without the transistor our modern world would not be possible. It is, arguably, the most important scientific advance of the 20th century and this weekend it officially enters its golden years. 65 years ago William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain (above) worked together to create the world's first point-contact transistor, a direct precursor to the electronic component that powers every thing from radios and microwaves, to super computers and smartphones. The first successful experiment was performed on December 16th in 1947, though work had begun decades before, with the FET (field-effect transistor) first being patented in 1925. It wasn't until after World War II that Bell Labs started putting serious work into the technology eventually resulting in the basic building block of logic circuits.

Some foreign firms still active in Iran's energy sector: U.S. report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At least seven companies from China, India, South Korea and South Africa continued to have investments in Iran's oil and gas sectors in 2012 even as Tehran came under international scrutiny for its nuclear ambitions, a U.S. government watchdog said on Friday.

A new U.S. law signed in August gave the Obama administration the authority to sanction firms that help Iran develop its energy resources, a key source of revenue for the country.

For a report to Congress required under that August law, the U.S. Government Accountability Office reviewed publicly available reports and data, and contacted the companies involved to check whether they have stepped back from Iran.

"We did not attempt to determine whether the activities for which the firms are listed in our reports met the legal criteria for sanctionable activities," the GAO said, noting the State Department is responsible for those types of determinations.

The State Department reviewed the report ahead of its publication but declined comment, the GAO said.

The United States and European Union have targeted Iran's energy sector for sanctions, an effort to pressure Iran to stop pursuing nuclear weapons. Iran has said its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

The United States requires buyers of Iranian oil to make significant cuts to their oil purchases, or risk being cut off from the U.S. financial system.

Most of the companies still involved in Iran's energy sector are from countries that on Friday received six-month waivers called "exceptions" to the sanctions because they have reduced oil trade.

Chinese activity included Sinopec's 51 percent stake in Iran's Yadavaran oil field, and China National Petroleum Corp's interest in a project to develop the Azadegan field, the GAO said.

South Korea's Daelim Industrial Co is helping develop the South Pars gas fields and is also involved in a liquefied natural gas project at Tombak, the report said.

Three Indian companies with stakes in the Farsi Block gas field -- Indian Oil Corp Ltd, ONGC Videsh Ltd and Oil India Ltd -- told the GAO that their exploration service contracts had expired and they had no plans to pursue further work on the project.

South Africa's Sasol has been active in a joint venture in Iran but recently stated it is trying to divest, the GAO said.

There were another eight companies from China, Malaysia, India, Croatia and Venezuela whose recent involvement in Iran was difficult to confirm, the GAO said. The companies did not all respond to the GAO's questions.

The GAO also examined whether foreign firms were selling refined petroleum products to Iran -- another activity now sanctionable under U.S. laws.

Syria's Sytrol has been reported to have sold gasoline to Iran, and was sanctioned by the United States on August 10.

The GAO found 12 of 17 firms had stopped selling petroleum products to Iran. The watchdog said it could not confirm whether an additional four firms from China and Venezuela were still active in the market.

Confessions of a Personal Trainer | L Style G Style

Fitness, nutrition, workout, resistance training, personal training, boot camp?all key phrases that I use literally hundreds of times throughout the day. However, between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am, my lululemon attire and ball cap lie neatly retired in the drawer labeled ?trainer clothes.? At the end of the day, I morph from eating, breathing, and thinking fitness into a normal human being. Just like you, I have my bad habits, temptations, and obstacles when it comes to health and fitness. I wasn?t born on the Island of Perfect Bodies and No Taste Buds. It?s true ? I struggle. I have to watch what I eat, understand the consequences of social parties, and drag myself to the gym even when I don?t want to! OK, that?s a lie, I don?t go to the gym if I don?t want to. I?m in a gym all day long, isn?t that enough?!

I?m sure you?re asking yourself, ?Why is this trainer, the expert on fitness, the guy who?s supposed to be amped about working out and lead a perfect lifestyle, disclosing that he, too, sometimes stumbles in his quest to stay fit?? It?s simple; I tell you about my own imperfections because I can relate to you. I understand the struggles. In seven years of training, I have worked with people of all shapes and sizes, ages, and professions, with countless limitations and unique personalities. Each brought a new challenge and a greater understanding of what it means to be ?fit and healthy.? Being able to build rapport and develop an organic relationship is largely based on relatability and a willingness to embrace another?s perspective. A a fitness professional, I must be able to peel back the layers of self doubt, fears, insecurities and empower my clients through knowledge and accountability.

Keep in mind that your trainer has feelings too; he or she has been there at some point in his or her life and has had to overcome his or her own adversities. I?m blessed to have an amazing co-owner, Joey, and wonderful staff that all have a variety of life experiences. To share a relevant story ? four years ago a young lady named Caroline walked though our doors needing to get in shape. After two years of hard work, over 100 lbs lost, and a new perspective on life, she joined our team and is now our lead trainer. This is just one of many stories from our HEAT family of trainers. Diversity is our foundation, relatability is our motto, fitness is our journey. We look forward to educating, inspiring, and keeping you accountable from within the pages of this blog. Enjoy!

China air force in large-scale drill amid tensions

-- China says its air force has staged one of its largest-ever drills amid heightened tensions with Japan and its southern neighbors over territorial claims.

State media said Friday that the air combat exercises involving more than 100 pilots were held over 11 days last month in the vast northwestern region of Xinjiang. Aircraft taking part included China's most modern jet fighters, the J-10 and J-11, according to the website of the Communist Party newspaper People's Daily.

While the exercises were being held, China's navy for the first time launched and recovered aircraft from the country's first aircraft carrier. The exercises also came amid stepped-up sea patrols around East China Sea islands claimed by China but controlled by Japan, as well as renewed feuding between China and other claimants in the South China Sea.

Kevin Langdon is writing several books and designing an inside-out clock. Karyn Huntting Peters is organizing a global problem-solving network. Alfred Simpson juggles multiple Web-programming projects in his free time. These three people might not have much in common?except for their unusually high IQs.

All three belong to exclusive high-IQ societies. Mensa International, whose members' test scores must land above the 98th percentile (or one in 50), may be the most popular, but it is just one option for the discerning test taker. The Triple Nine Society demands an IQ in the 99.9th percentile, whereas the Mega Society cuts off at the 99.9999th percentile (one in one million). The memberless Grail Society claims to accept one in 100 billion people?no one has applied so far.

Although members of IQ societies do not fit a single profile, they often join in search of a sense of belonging. ?I've heard a lot of people refer to themselves as aliens until they found a group like this,? says Peters, who serves as an officer of the Prometheus Society. ?But get them all together, and they become extremely talkative?they're up until five in the morning.? Langdon, who has founded or co-founded several high-IQ societies and now edits the journal of the Mega Society, also reports having joined to find people more like himself.

Others do it for the challenge. ?I joined Prometheus just to see if I could,? Simpson says. He now deals with the society's membership requests. He receives about two or three a week, although only three or four new members are accepted every year. The admissions process for these societies usually hinges on a score on an approved test, some of which have names such as Mega or Titan. Typical questions include analogies, the manipulation of complex three-dimensional shapes, or word problems that must be translated into equations.

Critics question whether IQ tests measure intelligence accurately, but ?genius? societies rarely claim to represent true genius: the merging of intellect, creativity and outstanding achievement. Peters notes that her high-IQ colleagues are acutely aware of their own ignorance. Simpson concurs. ?None of us consider ourselves a ?genius,?? he says. ?Well, maybe there's this one guy, but he hasn't been in the society for a while now.?

Site-specific, long-term research expanding understanding of climate change

Thursday, December 6, 2012

While science has often focused on big-scale, global climate change research, a study recently published in the journal Biosciencesuggests that long-term, integrated and site-specific research is needed to understand how climate change affects multiple components of ecosystem structure and function, sometimes in surprising ways.

"Long-term ecological research is important to understanding the effects of a changing climate on our natural resources and so much more," said Michael T. Rains, Director of the Forest Service's Northern Research Station. "With a network of more than 80 experimental forests and decades of monitoring data from these forests, the Forest Service is contributing invaluable information to this and a wide-range of critical research topics."

Research at the Forest Service's Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire's White Mountains forms the basis for the article "Long-Term Integrated Studies Show Complex and Surprising Effects of Climate Change in the Northern Hardwood Forest," by Peter Groffman of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies with Forest Service scientists Lindsey Rustad and John Campbell and others. The paper describes how the interplay of climate, forest ecosystem dynamics, and past land use determines how an individual forest might respond to climate change.

At the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, that interplay has produced surprising effects on hydrologic variables such as evapotranspiration, streamflow, and soil moisture and revealed the importance of changes in phenology on water, carbon, and nitrogen fluxes during seasonal transition periods. Scientists have also found surprises in winter climate change effects on plant and animal community composition and ecosystem services as well as the effects of anthropogenic disturbances and land-use history on plant community composition.

"The effects of climate change that we are documenting at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest truly affect all components of this forest," according to Rustad. "From winter recreation to Lyme Disease to changes in timber resources, what is happening in the forest is going to affect how people live, and science needs to address those questions."

Data from Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest show unequivocally that the climate has warmed, and temperature matters for species from the minute to the mighty. A warming climate is increasing the length of the growing seasons, as spring is advancing and fall is retreating. This extends the breeding season for birds, but also makes them more susceptible to late season frosts. Less snow in winter means more soil frost, which can damage tree roots and reduce the diversity and abundance of arthropods. Reductions in soil arthropods may directly affect the animals that feed on them, with ripple effects on the entire forest food web.

Warming winters also affect the distribution of pests and pathogens, such as the hemlock woolly adelgid, which are fundamental agents of disturbance in northeast forests. The insect's expansion north has been checked by its inability to tolerate temperatures colder than 13 degrees Fahrenheit, however researchers found that over the past 50 years Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest has experienced a 40 percent decline in days with a mean temperature of 13 degrees Fahrenheit, suggesting a potential for the hemlock woolly adelgid to affect hemlock throughout the tree's entire range within the next 30 years.

You Are The Most Important Person In YOUR World: 8 Ways To Practice Self-Care Over The Holidays

This holiday season, to ensure there is more love, connection and care in our lives, let's put our focus on developing a consistent practice of self-love and self-care instead!?

Below is a list of simple and practical ways that you can start practicing now, so you are full of the holiday cheer. If you make yourself the most important person in YOUR world, then you will most likely be able to make those you love the most important people in the world! ?
?
1. Affirmations and Mirror Work?

A great way to start practicing self-love and care is through positive affirmations and mirror work. Create 3 - 5 positive affirmations that make you smile and feel good when you think and say them. Then stand or sit in front of a mirror and say them out loud to yourself 10 times in the morning and 10 times at night. Some good ones to get you started are: I love myself just the way that I am, I am beautiful on the inside and out, I am worthy of greatness, I am worthy of love, I love you [insert your name], I really love you. ??

2. Nourish your cells, not just your taste buds?

Instead of eating food that just tastes good, try finding the right foods that make your body feel exceptional. A great way to do this is to check in with yourself during and after you eat, see how what you are eating is making you feel. Is your energy high or low? Is your stomach feeling good or a bit off??

A great place to start is to cut down on your sugar, wheat, or dairy intake. These things tend to do more for our taste buds and less for our cells and over all well-being. For more information on how to nourish your cells talk to my good friends at the Living Kitchen Wellness Group.?

Hours After A Meal, It's The Memory That Matters

In an experiment, people who saw a picture of a big bowl of soup before eating lunch were less hungry a few hours later than those who saw a smaller bowl, regardless of how much they ate at the meal.

stuart burford photography/iStockphoto.com

It's no surprise that how much a person eats determines how full they feel right after a meal. But it's the memory of that meal, and not the meal itself, that matters a couple of hours later. So does this mean you trick yourself into thinness? Probably not. But it does tell us something about the role that manipulating memory may play in calorie intake.

We've known for a while that people who are distracted while eating ? such as by watching TV or typing ? are not really thinking about what they're eating. They're not making memories of the food, and may be setting themselves up for later hunger. This area of research is helping scientists to better understand "how our memory for food comes to influence the decisions we make and the amount of food we eat," says Jeffrey Brunstrom, an experimental psychologist at the University of Bristol in the U.K.

In a new study published in the journal PLOS One, Brunstrom and his colleagues took a group of 100 people and, just before lunch, showed them a picture of a bowl of supermarket-brand creamed tomato soup. Half saw a bowl with 300 ml of soup, and half saw a bowl with 500 ml of soup. (This is about the difference between a cup and a bowl of soup.)

Each participant was then led into a cubicle where they ate some tomato soup ? either the cup or bowl amount. But they couldn't tell exactly how much soup they were eating because the scientists had employed a special system that could covertly add or remove soup from the bowl. The participants were just told to eat soup until they reached a special line on their bowl.

After lunch, people who ate more soup felt more satiated than those who ate less. But two and three hours later, it was the picture of the soup they saw earlier that mattered more. Those who had seen the bigger bowl of soup felt less hungry, whether or not they had eaten more soup.

At that point, Brunstrom says, "the memory was dominating hunger," not the actual number of calories consumed.

What's going on inside the brain and body isn't completely clear at this point, but there are a lot of changes and feedbacks that take place when we eat food. "Memory for a recently consumed meal might give further refinement to those signals," Brunstrom says.

Further evidence that memory matters for satiation comes from amnesiacs who suffer from a condition called hyperphagia, in which they cannot remember what they've eaten. In those patients, Brunstrom says, "if they eat lots of meals, they tend to feel just bloated, but they don't necessarily feel full. We think that they can't actually attribute [the signals from their bodies] to what has taken place."

This research may not yet provide any radical new strategies for weight loss, but, Brunstrom says, "one logical conclusion from this is that anything that we can do to promote the memory of a recent meal is a good thing."

Last year, we brought you an intriguing example: Washington, D.C., chef Bryon Brown's creative efforts to help people remember his meals by reinforcing the ingredients and flavors through acting, singing and music.

Brunstrom's advice? Stop eating in front of the computer screen.

FCC clarifies IP interface requirement and extends deadline to 2013

You may have not noticed, but your cable box at home has a Firewire port on it, designed to serve up content to other devices in your home. This almost useless port -- thanks DRM -- is a result of an FCC mandate that has been enforced for almost ten years. Due to the lack of use, the cable industry asked that the rules be updated to require an IP interface instead. That request was granted in the fall of 2010 and was supposed to go into effect this very month.

Evidently two years wasn't long enough to find an acceptable industry standard stack to deliver video over IP, so TiVo and the cable industry requested an extension. The FCC let it be known last week in a Memorandum Opinion and Order that a single standard wasn't actually required, as long as the IP interface on the cable box used an industry standard -- the Commission did bless the DLNA Premium Video Profile as a suitable example. We'll have to wait and see if any other standards are in the mix, but regardless, TiVo and the rest of the cable industry now have until June of 2014 before every one of their boxes has to be able to deliver HD content to 3rd party devices like TVs, Blu-ray players and tablets via IP. In this particular context, TiVo is being treated as a cable company box supplier, although we're not sure how this will apply to its retail devices. Only time will tell if this mandate will bear fruit, but with any luck, the second time will be a charm.

Are Small-Business Owners Going to Spoil the Mood? (Opinion)You ...

Consumer certainty strike a 5 year high this month, a headlines blared in response to a recover of a many new University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index. The certain spin was that rising residence prices and disappearing stagnation have done consumers upbeat, causing a index to time in during a top spin given before a Great Recession began.

Despite a happy news, consumers aren?t that optimistic. Not usually are a consumer view numbers weaker than a headlines suggest, though also small-business owners are expected to taint consumers with their some-more downbeat views.?

Related:?What?s a Best Outcome for Small Business on a Fiscal Cliff? (Opinion)

The headlines are deceiving. Consumers aren?t assured about a future. The view index is stoical of dual parts: consumers? views of stream mercantile conditions and their expectations about destiny conditions. While consumers were some-more certain about stream mercantile conditions this month than final month, their expectations about a destiny were indeed some-more pessimistic, a University of Michigan information reveals.

Moreover, a stream spin of consumer view isn?t quite clever when compared with chronological standards. Advisor Perspectives records that a Nov figure lies next both a index?s normal given 1978 and a normal for years when a economy was expanding.?

Further, consumer view tends to lane small-business confidence, and small-business owners aren?t all that certain right now. Despite rising 0.3 points final month, a National Federation of Independent Business Small Business Optimism Index stays next a pre-recession average, mired in what a association?s economists call a ?recession range.?

Related:?Why a Local Economy?s Strength Is Critical to Small-Business Success (Infographic)

Small-business owners are disturbed that worker health-care costs will arise almost as a Affordable Care Act is implemented, and that Congress and a President won?t determine on taxes and spending, promulgation a nation over a mercantile precipice into a retrogression in 2013. A new consult of small-business owners conducted for a U.S. Chamber of Commerce by Harris Interactive reported an 11 commission indicate arise in a final year in a series of owners who are uncertain of either their business will be improved off in a destiny than it has been in a past.?

Small-business owners sojourn most worse off financially than they were before a Great Recession since they suffered a quite low dump in income during a mercantile downturn. The Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances shows?that a median income of households headed by a self-employed chairman forsaken 19 percent between 2007 and 2010 ? distant some-more than a 6 percent decrease for households led by someone operative for a income or wage. Similarly, Census Bureau total uncover that a income of a standard wage-earning domicile fell usually 1.3 percent between 2006 and 2010 when totalled in inflation-adjusted terms, though plummeted 17.4 percent for a median self-employed household.

The some-more sanguinary small-business certainty numbers are some-more expected to envision destiny mercantile conditions than a some-more assured consumer-sentiment figures. To start with, a NFIB?s magnitude is a improved predictor of destiny mercantile expansion than a University of Michigan?s indicator.

Moreover, small-business owners? melancholy will expected be a drag on a economy. Business owners? downbeat expectations will lead them to refrain from investment and hiring. Because half of private-sector practice and sum domestic product are accounted for by tiny businesses, miss of activity among tiny businesses will keep GDP and practice from flourishing much. Faced with low practice and wages, a view of consumers, many of whom also work during tiny companies, will spin negative.

Sorry for a out-of-the-holiday-spirit message, though economics is a gloomy science, after all. ?

Submission Wrestling ? Recreation and Sports - Miker Arthur 42's blog

Submission wrestling is really a general term used to spell it out an aspect of fight sport and fighting techinques that is targeted on ground fighting and clinch by having an purpose of making the opponent passout or submit. Submission wrestling is also known as submission grappling, submission fighting, sport grappling or combat wrestling in Japan.

Submission wrestling as a sport incorporates various styles and techniques from traditional wrestling styles for example Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Luta Livre Esportiva and Freestyle Wrestling.

Reputation Submission Wrestling

Submission wrestling includes a long and rich history. Ale submission wrestling dates back to over 4000 years! Such a wrestling was common in ancient China, Greece, Rome and India. Paintings and sculptures that go back to more than 2000 to 1085 BC portray wrestlers and combaters using this kind of wrestling in ancient Egypt.

It is no surprise that grappling goes so long. Forever of your time, man has been conflict with one another due to the limited resources available. As fighting increased around the world, individuals and societies started forming fighting and combat methods for attack and martial arts.

As time progressed, wrestling became accepted like a sport improving the popularity of effective grappling techniques. Throughout the late eighteenth century, the Greeks used rules of submission in combat sports that have been just like those used in the Lancashire type of wrestling that has been common in the late eighteenth century.

Ground Positions in Grappling

Ground positions are very important since they squeeze opponent ready that will make it easier for a grappler to use the submission maneuver.

You?ll find the various ground positions offered to a grappler who seeks to control a competitor. These positions include:

Side control: The opponent is pinned to the ground in the side with the body. The grappler then applies his or her weight around the opponent?s chest, shoulders and hips.

Full mount: This location is mainly accustomed to apply a choke hold or to attack an opponent?s arms. The grappler sits on sides of an opponent?s chest using their bodyweight to manage the opponent?s chest.

Back mount: The grappler uses his or her legs to hook the opponent?s thighs from their backs. The grappler also wraps their arms round the chest or neck of the opponent to manipulate their torso.

Types of Submissions

Submission holds are sorted into two broad categories: chokes and joint locks.

Chokes

These types of submission seek to restrict the opponent?s windpipe or their carotid artery causing them to distribute. Chokes that entail restriction in the wind pipe are extremely dangerous and many banned in fight sport.

Blood chokes however are quite typical. These chokes cut the circulation of blood towards the brain causing the opponent to feed out right away. This type of submission is quite dangerous however and really should just be done under supervision from the trained specialist to prevent damage that may be due to long periods of unconsciousness.

Joint Locks

These submission holds involve isolating an opponent?s limb and forcing it to maneuver past its normal flexibility. Most of these submission techniques usually seek to induce extreme pain towards the opponent making him or her to tap out.

Joint locks can be be extremely dangerous when used on the ankles, knees or the spine. Some types of joint submission holds are banned in combat sport because they could potentially cause serious damage to an opponent, ending their careers.

Common Varieties of Submission Holds In Combat Sport

The most popular forms of submission holds utilized in combat sport today apply joint locks, choke holds or a combination of the two. They include:

The Mandible Claw, LeBell Lock, The Anaconda Vice, The Walls of Jericho, Kimura, the ankle lock along with the Cripplers Crossface.

These holds are popularized by super stars like Chris Jericho, the late Chris Benoit, Brock Lesnar, Daniel Bryant, The Undertaker, Kurt Angle and CM Punk.

Most varieties of submissions used today are modifications of traditional grappling techniques. Content articles are just crazy however and should only be carried out by professionals as they are able result in serious injury as well as death.

Jeff Bridges Turns 63 Today!

Oscar winner Jeff Bridges is 63 today!

Bridges was born in Los Angeles to his show business parents, Lloyd and Dorothy Bridges, and his acting older brother, Beau Bridges. It wasn?t long before Jeff Bridges got into the family business, as he made his first uncredited big screen appearance in "The Company She Keeps," before the age of one. He continued his interest in acting throughout childhood, and went on to appear in several episodes of his father's television shows, "Sea Hunt," and "The Lloyd Bridges Show."

After graduating from high school, Jeff enrolled in the United States Coast Guard reserves and served for eight years while pursuing his career. His big break came in 1971, when he starred in the critically acclaimed film, "The Last Picture Show." The film thrust the 20-something onto the public stage, and gained him his first Academy Award nomination.

Throughout the 70s, Bridges made music and painted while experimenting with film, reluctantly starring in ""The Iceman Cometh." He told PBS that he enjoyed making the 1973 adaptation of the Eugene O?Neill play so much his fate was sealed. ?I decided to be an actor kind of late in my career,? he told the Hollywood Reporter.

Bridges met his future wife Susan Geston on the set of the 1975 movie, "Rancho Deluxe," and the couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in June. The father of three attributes much of his success in films such as 1982's "Tron," 1998's "The Big Lebowiski," and 2009's "Crazy Heart," to his wife. In 2010, he told GQ:

?My relationship with my wife is one of the most precious things in my life... to have a partner who encourages you to go out and do your stuff, which in my case means being away... It gives me strength. She's holding the kite strings so I can go way out there.?

Bridges is continually reinventing himself. Aside from acting, he has produced several films, and in 2003, he published a collection of his photography titled, "Pictures By Jeff Bridges." In 2011, he released his first major studio album, "What a Little Bit of Love Can Do" and toured with his band.

Is it possible that another reinvention is in the cards for this 63-year-old? It doesn?t seem out of the question. In 2009, Bridges told Vanity Fair why he sees a big upside to aging:

"The increased intimacy with your mortality is an exciting thing. You feel, ?Yeah I?m dying. I?ll die of old age if I?m lucky. But a piano could fall on me or something,? and you just sense the preciousness of being alive and the opportunity that you have to make a difference in the world and realize some of your dreams. You ask yourself with a little more eagerness, ?What do you want to do now?? It?s exciting."

We can't wait to see what Jeff Bridges does next. Happy birthday!

US-Afghan base attacked in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Taliban suicide bombers attacked a joint U.S.-Afghan air base in eastern Afghanistan early Sunday, detonating explosives at the gate and sparking a gunbattle that lasted at least two hours with American helicopters firing down on the militants.

The attackers and at least five Afghans were killed, officials said. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the assault.

It was the largest attack on the Jalalabad air base since February, when a suicide car bombing at the gate triggered an explosion that killed nine Afghans, six of them civilians.

In Sunday's attack, two vehicles packed with explosives barreled toward the main gate of the base around 6 a.m. local time. The first vehicle, a four-wheel-drive car, blew up at the gate, said Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal, a spokesman for the provincial police chief. Guards started shooting at the second vehicle before it too exploded, he added. It was unclear whether the explosives were detonated by the attackers themselves or by shooting from the guards.

Two Afghan students from a private medical school were caught up in the attack and killed, as were three other Afghans working at the base, Mashreqiwal said. He did not know whether the base workers were private guards, members of the security forces or civilian employees.

Nine attackers took part in the assault in total, he said, three of whom were killed in the suicide blasts and another six gunmen who died in the ensuing fighting that lasted a few hours.

Maj. Martyn Crighton, a spokesman for the international military force in Afghanistan, said that helicopters "were deployed and used."

The NATO military coalition described the attack as a failure.

"We can confirm insurgents, including multiple suicide bombers, attacked Jalalabad Airfield this morning. None of the attackers succeeded in breaching the perimeter," Lt. Col. Hagen Messer, a spokesman for the international military coalition, said in an email.

He said that the fighting had ended by midmorning and that reports showed one member of the Afghan security forces was killed. Several foreign troops were wounded, but Messer did not give any numbers or details.

"The final assessment of what happened this morning is not yet complete, but initial reports indicate there were three suicide bombers," Messer said.

In the south, meanwhile, a NATO service member was killed in an insurgent attack, the international coalition said in a statement. It did not provide further details.
