Small Things ? Ginny Foreman ? Shannon Skinner's Extraordinary ...

By Heather Sanders.

Recently I expressed a desire to create a list of homeschooling bloggers, something I still plan to do. However, I feel a need to clarify what I mean by ?homeschool bloggers?. Most, not all, of us whom homeschool are moms. In addition to homeschooling, we also have other areas of interest we balance with the education of our children. Some of us work from home while others work outside of the home, and still others spend time in creative endeavors such as home decorating, crafting, painting, crocheting, or jewelry-making, to name a few. All of these efforts, along with the rhythm of our daily lives are included alongside our posts about home education.

Perusing the blogs of homeschooling moms becomes a virtual feast because of their two-fold effect of expanding our awareness of new ways to approach academics or learning, while at the same time opening our eyes to a wide range of different interests and ways each of us can nurture our own creative souls.

Ginny Foreman - Small Things

It is with that in mind that I want to introduce you to Ginny Foreman?s blog, Small Things. While a quick glance at her about page gives you a quick synopsis of her faith, marriage, six children, and areas of interest, it is her daily posts that bring to life what it is like for eight people to live in a 1500 square foot, 200 year old farmhouse on two acres.

In a word?
It appears to be absolutely enchanting, and perhaps a tad bit snug.

Initially I was attracted to the simplicity of the blog design peppered plentifully with absolutely gorgeous photography. I scrolled through her posts, page by page, smiling at all the joy in life she manages to capture through her camera?s lens.

A father reading a favorite board book to two of his children.

Larkspur in her mud pie kitchen

A daughter, adorned in shades of red, working fervently in her mud pie kitchen.

A love of knitting and books

Two of Ginny?s favorite things to do ? knit and read.

Digging up sweet potatoes

For sanity's sake

Getting outside for the sake of sanity.

Chicken humor

Even a little chicken humor.

If it isn?t already obvious, Ginny has an eye for the ?small things? that make daily life beautiful. Her blog is a fine retreat after a hectic day of homeschooling or simply trying to get things ?done?.

The way we homeschool

The posts in Ginny?s Homeschooling Archives are evidence of the hands-on approach she and her husband share for learning.

As she so clearly states on her about page: ?I don?t subscribe to any one theory or method. Each of our children is unique and I do my best to meet the needs of each of them on an individual level?

She expounds more fully on what sort of homeschooler she is in her post, The way we homeschool.

Dishes in the background

I am thrilled by this photo in Ginny?s post, A very good first day, simply because she included the sink full of dishes in the background. Because honestly, THAT IS TRUTH in homeschooling. There simply is no way to get it ALL done, ALL the time.

Acorn boats with paper sails

In addition to her homeschooling posts, there are a number of posts about creating with children, some of which cross-reference with her homeschool posts.

The post, Trudy and the boats, has Ginny and her children making ?A tiny fleet of acorn top boats with paper sails?waiting for the perfect day to take them sailing.?

Other posts of Ginny?s to delight you and your children?s crafty senses:

? Dyeing eggs with silk ties

? An Attempt (fabric scrap lanterns)

? Sewn *by* children

Teaching children how to knit

Be sure to take some time for yourself to visit Ginny at Small Things. She IS a homeschool mom, but as I stated initially, there is so much more her blog has to offer; this chronicle of her life will warm your heart as much as it feeds your soul.

I would love to feature a homeschool blogger from time to time. Who are you favorites?
